Connecting Western and Central Slovakia
Via Pribina is the concessionaire of the R1 expressway connecting Nitra to Tekovské Nemce in western and central Slovakia including a northern bypass in Banská Bystrica. Forming a key east–west corridor, the 52 km highway serves the Nitra region and surrounding industrial and agricultural areas, while improving connectivity between regional centres and supporting economic development.
Key Facts
- Availability-based contract with the Slovakian State
- First highway PPP in Slovakia
- Winter maintenance innovations, including sensors monitoring salt levels
- AI counter-flow detection system improving safety
- 16,000 m2 of wild meadows to protect pollinisators
A pioneering PPP delivering positive results
Via Pribina was delivered through the first highway PPP in Slovakia. Since construction works were achieved in 2011, it has carried about 130 million vehicles and reduced accidents by 84% compared with the former route.
Steering investment to maintain top standards
Via Pribina is undergoing a full resurfacing programme scheduled for completion in 2026. More than 40,000 tonnes of asphalt have been recovered and recycled locally. Operational innovations, such as AI systems detecting wrong-way driving, continue to enhance road safety. Together, these investments ensure the highway remains at the highest standards of comfort and reliability.
Strong winter know-how
Winter conditions in central Slovakia require constant operational vigilance. Via Pribina’s teams operate 24/7 during the winter season with response procedures capable of deploying within 30 minutes of the first snowfall. We integrate smart ultrasonic sensors that continuously monitor salt levels in storage silos, allowing our operators to optimise de-icing operations.
Natural grasslands for pollinators
Via Pribina was the birthplace of the Wild Meadows programme, where roadside areas are transformed into natural grasslands supporting pollinators. To further strengthen these ecosystems, more than 100 beehives have been installed in a nearby orchard. The initiative is now expanding across the VINCI Highways network.
Social impact beyond the highway
Since 2012, the Via Pribina Foundation has supported initiatives in education, culture, sport and social solidarity. Through partnerships with municipalities, schools and non-profit organisations, the Foundation contributes to regional development while strengthening the highway’s long-term connection with the territories it serves.
