A vital link between Bavaria and Berlin
Via Gateway Thüringen is the concessionnaire of a section of the A9 highway in the German state of Thuringia, between Triptis and Schleiz. Part of the strategic Berlin–Munich corridor, the highway carries intense long-distance traffic across central Germany, combining heavy freight flows linking northern and southern Europe with major passenger traffic between the country’s largest economic centres.
Key facts
- Availability-based PPP with DEGES, German Unity highway planning and construction company
- A major construction project opened to service in 2014
- 5 rest areas
- 30 rainwater retention basins
A pioneering road PPP
Delivered through the first availability-based PPP road project in Germany, the project expanded and modernised the highway, widening 19 km to six lanes and rehabilitating a further 27.5 km to improve capacity and reliability. Works were completed in just three years.
Winter operations at altitude
Due to the high altitude, winter maintenance is a critical operational priority. Our dedicated teams and eight specialised vehicles ensure safe traffic even in severe conditions. Our advanced weather information systems and roadside weather stations provide precise forecasts, while GPS tracking of maintenance vehicles allows real-time coordination of snow clearing and de-icing operations along the corridor.
Protecting water resources
As part of the works, we delivered a network of rainwater retention basins to manage runoff from the highway. These facilities collect, filter and regulate surface water before it is released into the natural environment, protecting nearby rivers and ecosystems. In the event of an incident, the basins can be immediately isolated to prevent pollution.
A leading road concessionaire in Germany
VINCI Highways is Germany’s leading road concessionaire, with more than 230 km of roads and highways under construction or in operation through five concessions across the country.
