A permanent link to Prince Edward Island
Confederation Bridge connects Prince Edward Island to mainland Canada across the Northumberland Strait. As the country’s only fixed link to the Island, it ensures year-round continuity for daily mobility, freight transport and tourism flows. Beyond regional connectivity, it plays a strategic role in ensuring economic integration and supply chain reliability between Prince Edward Island and the rest of the country.
Key facts
- Traffic-risk concession with the Government of Canada

Mastering complex marine maintenance
We manage Confederation Bridge through a highly specialized structural monitoring and asset preservation programme. Facing drifting ice loads, marine humidity and repeated freeze–thaw cycles, we conduct our annual inspections using dedicated diagnostic equipment tailored to the Bridge’s specific operational environment.
Steering investment to sustain infrastructure excellence
In 2026, we will deliver a full resurfacing programme across the entire deck, representing the largest investment since the bridge opened to traffic.
The pavement solution is engineered for extreme winter conditions and temperature variations. Works will be carried out under live traffic, requiring precise phasing and close coordination to maintain connectivity.
Ensuring safe journeys in extreme conditions
Marine humidity and drifting ice require adapted winter maintenance strategies. We deploy optimized brine application and specialized equipment to prevent ice formation on this exposed structure. Continuous 24/7 surveillance and rapid-response capabilities enable us to secure safe and reliable crossings throughout the year.
A bridge at the heart of island life
Beyond its transport role, the bridge is an active contributor to Prince Edward Island’s economic growth and community life. Our operations team is widely recognised for its professionalism and welcoming attitude toward visitors, earning the Tourism Industry Association of Prince Edward Island’s Operator of the Year award. We also mobilise for major community events such as the Terry Fox Run, reinforcing the bridge’s role as a national symbol and a partner in causes that unite Canadians.
