A new connection for better regional and interregional mobility
Via Mühlhausen Thüringen is the concessionnaire of the B247 federal road between Mühlhausen and Bad Langensalzanin in Northern Thuringia. The corridor enhances links to A4, A71, and A38 highways in central Germany. Commuters, freight traffic, and tourism greatly benefit from this modern connection. It is the first time that the PPP model is used to develop a federal road in Germany.
Key facts
- Availability-based PPP with DEGES
- The first PPP for a federal road in Germany
- A major greenfield construction project
- High requirements implemented in water protection areas
A major greenfield construction project
The new B247 is being built as a federal highway with two to four lanes. The project is being delivered together with VINCI Construction Deutschland and VINCI Construction GeoInfrastructure. The works include four new bypasses, 31 bridges, eight intersections and nearly two million tonnes of earthworks. Extensive environmental protection measures are being implemented.
Protecting flora and fauna
Via Mühlhausen Thüringen is creating a 4-hectare biotope with meandering channels, wildflower meadows and native trees species. More than 42,000 bankside plants help filter pollutants, while eleven grasses and 27 herb species enrich an area of 34,000 m². This ecological compensation area contribute to restoring natural habitats while benefiting local communities.
Bats flight aids and amphibian protection
Five bridges feature bat flight aids, with over 4m-high walls preventing traffic collisions. Trees, shrubs, and passages enhance protection. These nocturnal insect-eaters are very important for the ecosystem. We also protect migrating amphibians with temporary guidance systems, manual relocations and permanent underpasses.
A leading road concessionaire in Germany
VINCI Highways is Germany’s leading road concessionaire, with more than 230 km of roads and highways under construction or in operation through five concessions across the country.
