A strategic corridor in Central Bohemia
Via Salis is the concessionaire of the D4 highway, connecting Příbram to Písek across Central and South Bohemia in the Czech Republic. The corridor forms part of the wider route linking Prague to Bavaria, following the historical alignment of the historic “Golden Salt Route”. Via Salis serves a balanced mix of daily commuters, regional mobility, freight transport and leisure traffic, strengthening cross-border connectivity and improving travel reliability along this key north–south axis.
Key facts
- Availability-based PPP with the Czech State
- First highway PPP in the the Czech Republic
- Major greenfield project delivered by VINCI Construction
- 100% camera coverage
- 400,000 m² of wild meadows
- Zero pesticides in operations
From first-of-its-kind to positive blueprint
Via Salis is Czech Republic’s first highway PPP, introducing a new approach in the country’s transport infrastructure. Completed on schedule, integrating design, construction, financing, operation and long-term maintenance within a single performance-driven framework, and recognised through multiple national and international awards, Via Salis now serves as a positive blueprint for infrastructure developments in the Czech Republic.
Setting a new technological standard
Via Salis marks a new benchmark for smart highway management in the Czech Republic. Full video surveillance covers 100% of the corridor, supported by an extensive network of variable message signs and dedicated weather stations. This level of integration is unprecedented for a Czech highway of this scale, enabling real-time traffic management and reinforcing safety, reliability and service quality.
A digital twin for long-term performance
Via Salis is the first highway in the Czech Republic to apply a full-BIM methodology across linear infrastructure. It serves as a living digital model connected directly to our asset management system. Any change to the infrastructure, whether replacing a guardrail or repairing damaged equipment, is automatically reflected, ensuring real-time consistency between field operations and digital records.
Engineering new ways to operate
Beyond design and digital modelling, we continuously refine how the D4 is operated on a daily basis. Microwave asphalt repair reduces intervention time, drone-based inspections enhance coverage, and AI-driven pavement management supports predictive maintenance. Winter maintenance is optimized through temperature-based salt management, reducing material use while maintaining high safety standards.
Embedding environmental performance
We recycled nearly 100% of reclaimed asphalt during construction works. In operations, we reuse rainwater for maintenance activities, and develop alertnative energies. We deploy our wild meadows program accross 400,000 m² along the corridor and carry maintenance without pesticides.
